AsTom Chaplin prepares to put his multimillion-selling band on the back burner to focus on a solo career, he reveals his debut album is based on his recovery from drink and drug addictions.
"You get to your 30s and you have a different perspective on life. I’ve become more reflective and realistic, more accepting, all of that sort of stuff. At the moment, I feel like I have experienced quite a lot in a short space of time. It has been an intense existence and I’ve been to some very dark places, as well as some super-duper highs and everything else in the middle.
To be through the other side of that and feel serene and calm as a human being, well, it’s interesting to reflect on all that stuff. Most of the songs I’m writing now seem to be my own manual of how to get through it.
[The songs] are direct and soul-searching. It’s kind of what interests me. I don’t know if it will interest anyone else.”
